About half of holiday shoppers visited department stores on Black Friday --this year, however, traffic did not translate into purchases, customers did not buy as much as they were expected to.
"Sales at U.S. stores open at least a year dropped 26.1 percent at luxury retailer Saks, trailing the 19.3 percent average of analysts’ estimates compiled by Retail Metrics Inc. Comparable-store sales at Macy's, the No. 2 U.S. department- store operator, dropped 6.1 percent, more than the 1.5 percent estimated fall. "
This is no surprise to me. Shoppers are not buying the same way they used to, and that includes luxury designer stores. Not to mention, since these stores are doing so poorly, it will impact everything, including their labor. This means less people will be hired, including visual merchandisers.
